History of Lake Gregory
History of the Lake goes back to the English era. Story of this lake is a little bit interesting. Newly appointed English Governor Sir William Gregory selected Nuwara Eliya for his administrative area in 1872. He was an artist. Moreover, he was a nature lover. He loves to design the city for a great look.
At that time, this area was a marshy land. It damaged to the beauty of the city. Therefore, the governor decided to convert it to a beautiful lake.
The beautiful “Thalagala Oya” starting from Piduruthalagala Mountains, flowed across this marshy land to the Nanu Oya. This land was nearly 12 acres in area. It belonged to Captain P. Galway. Therefore, Governor Gregory purchased this land from him in 1873. He constructed a dam across the Thalagala Oya to create this Lake Gregory.
Governor William Gregory also developed the area later for the people to enjoy and play. Further, the water level of the Lake never changes. It drains out the excess water to keep the water level constant.
Present situation of the Gregory Lake
Nuwara Eliya Municipal Council presently does the caring part. They did lot of efforts to make the Lake Gregory and the surroundings beautiful.
Newly built Gregory Park is a nice place to spend the evening. It also full with activities such as Pony Riding, Cycling, Jogging paths, Boat riding, Air Rifle shooting and many more activities. All sanitary facilities are also available in the area.
If you need any accommodation around the lake, it is available. Moreover, a visitor able access easily to Horton Plains, Victory Park and the Haggala Park from the Lake. Furthermore, there are many classy restaurants available near the Lake Gregory.
