Temple of Tooth is situated in Kandy. Sri Dalada Maligawa is the native name. Presently this place is important because this is the house of the Sacred Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha. This was a palace of the several last ruled kings in the history. Similarly King Vimaladharmasuriya I built this palace. This is presently a main worshiping place of Buddhist pilgrims. UNESCO has named this site as a world heritage site.
What a Visitor Can See Here
A visitor can see various carvings, paintings and statues here in Temple of Tooth. Main gateway is an iconic structure. We will find an ancient moonstone in front of this main gateway. Temple of Tooth has two main tiers. Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha is housing on the upper floor. Door carvings of the shrine are ivory. A golden canopy located on top of the roof of the shrine. Canopy added in 1987. The iconic octagon was built by the last king of Sri Lanka, in 1802.
The three museums, Temple of the Tooth Museum, National Museum of Kandy and International Buddhist Museum are located on the premises. Visitors can see those museums too. Every foreigner should have to pay a Temple of the Tooth entry fee here.
The Cloud Wall
Parapet wall around the Kandy Lake and around the Temple of Tooth is also iconic. Cloud wall is the name of this iconic parapet wall. Last king of Sri Lanka built this Cloud wall. He could not finish it because English army arrested him and taken into custody. Therefore the cloud wall is still unfinished. People light oil lamps in the triangular holes of this wall during Temple of the Tooth Ceremony in the past.

Temple of Tooth ceremony comes once a year. This is a parade season. This Temple of Tooth Perahera is the biggest Buddhist celebration of the country. People can watch it free. This is a colorful, traditional festival.
