For the sake of reservation of wildlife in Sri Lanka, government establishes several National Parks. Udawalawe National Park is prominent among those. Furthermore the park is famous for Elephants. Eth Athuru Sewana is the affiliate elephant orphanage to this park. We can find one other elephant orphanage in Sri Lanka and it named as Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage. Udawalawe National Park is in the dry zone. Therefore the annual rainfall is nearly 1500mm.
Area of the Udawalawe National Park
The park is in the boundary of Sabaragamuwa and Uva provinces in Sri Lanka. Udawalawe park extents about 30,820 acres. Indeed the Walawe River is crossing the park. Therefore this area received this name of Udawalawe.
Fauna of the Park
Mainly the elephants are the gems of the park. According to the last census, total elephant population is nearly 400 and 250 of them are permanently resident in Udawalawe National Park. In addition to elephants you can see some other mammals there in this park. As examples, rusty-spotted cat, fishing cat, Sri Lankan leopard, Sri Lanka sloth bear, Sri Lankan samba deer, Sri Lankan axis deer, Indian muntjac, Sri Lankan water buffalo, golden jackal, Asian palm civet, wild boar, Sri Lankan spotted chevrotain, etc
Udawalawe Bird Watching
Udawalawe National Park is one of the best bird watching destination in Sri Lanka. Therefore most of the bird lovers do not miss this place. Because of we can find many species of endemic and migrants here. Spur fowl (jungle fowl/wild rooster), Sri Lanka grey hornbill, brown capped babbler are some of the endemic birds we can find here. Furthermore we can see large number of water birds such as cormorants, spot billed pelican, Asian open bill, painted stork, Eurasian spoonbill, Black headed ibis, etc.
Udawalawe Safari
If a visitor needs to go for a safari at the Udawalawe National Park, he must hire a safari vehicle. Visitor can hire a safari jeep nearby. Jeep driver will guide you around the park roads.
